I picked up a Brother P-touch CUBE label maker (apparently a hit among all sorts of hobbies), and ended up deciding that the best way to go was text labels + color coding to indicate zones/functions (e.g., hot pink for garbage disposals). Works fantastic.

Love the idea. Raspberry Pis (even with swap disabled, logs in memory, etc.) really disabused me of the notion of remotely reliable microSD cards on a longish term. I would suggest considering eMMC.
An Apollo Automation MTR-1 Multi-Target Radar Multisensor. Starts at $36.99 without doodads. Finding and using it and other devices has sent me all the way down the smart home rabbit hole (Homebridge and Home Assistant running on a Beelink N100 system etc.) and it's been a hoot.
