You don't get to pick and choose what productive technologies to adopt. You either adopt them, or you'll be paying the countries that do and you'll still lose your domestic industry to competition.
It's not about whether it makes rational economic sense, it's whether people are happy about it.
It could make economic sense to be the world leaders in the next drug that turns everyone into mindless worker drones ("if we're not making the factories that make the drugs the Chinese will!") but people still won't be happy about what it means for their futures.
A country who drugged their citizens into mindless robots would be shunned, sanctioned and perhaps attacked. Their economy would be isolated and not pose a threat from competition. It's an obvious attack on our collective humanity and is treated as such.
Until AI proves a systemic risk to humanity there would be no similar consensus on shunning its use, and the economic spoils go to the countries that adopt it.

Taxes are already pretty massive; there is only so much you can take without consequences.
US taxes (state, federal, and local) are approaching
30 cents on every dollar, and that is with the Fed spending ~135% of revenues each year.
You might point out that many Europeans have higher taxes, and they do. However, they also have healthcare and generous national pensions. Americans have to pay for those after taxes.
This makes it hard to freeze services and raise taxes.
I understand the sentiment, and would expect that grace be given to American citizens, but the USA has millions of people applying for visas and citizenship that don't have fraud convictions.
And it's not the cold war any more, collecting chess champions doesn't give quite the same national prestige in 2026 as it did in 1980.
But the American public is petrified of systems like that because of the leftovers of frontier settler culture and fear of communism. They're apparently far more comfortable with the similar but worse systems being set up by corporations.

The article could have benefited from a mention of why Anthropic is like this now.
The reason this happened to you is Anthropic's systems presumably think your work looks like (Chinese) distillation and subscription-to-token-reseller-api practices.
But that's a reasonable guess at best, and knowing my own usage _nothing_ would have made my activity look like that. I was not maxing out usage limits, I was not running things 24/7, and my activity peaked on my typical working hours.
And that's exactly the type of situation where I wish Anthropic would have just put me in front of a human to review OR at least let me know what in my usage caused flags to be raised so I can avoid them in the future
Eh, the article talks about people being banned during checkout and I was hit with this as well. No VPN, zero tokens used, created account, paid for a year plan, immediately banned. I had to issue a charge back and I'm sure I'll be banned again if I try to create a new account with the same credit card, address, email, etc.
I sent many emails trying to get it reversed, but was meet with silence. It's a shame, as I use Claude at work quite happily and would love to use it at home, but they decided something about my location in the midwest, my ISP (fairly large regional ISP), or my email address (gmail account of first.last) was suspicious.
