I don't really have any idea if tariffs are good or bad. What I do know is that just announcing that they will go into effect with very little notice and then they won't go into effect and then they do but then they are decalared illegal because they weren't passed through the official methods isn't good.

It was _great_ for the companies that collected billions in tariffs and got refunds when the obviously illegal tariffs were declared illegal while training their customers to accept higher prices... that certainly won't go back to pre-tariff levels.

tariffs are objectively* bad from a "big picture" perspective.

There are some situations where they create winners and losers so that some people in some countries will win, but they always do more damage than good "overall"(or in aggregate across all parties).

A link to the math behind it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadweight_loss

*in almost all cases... For certain goods where you actually want to lower consumption such as cigarettes, then maybe arguably they are good? Same argument as for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigouvian_tax

The “big picture” perspective is missing a bunch of reasons beyond just lowering consumption in the short term. For example even if you can buy cheaper food elsewhere it is still important to have a domestic food production industry.

i'm right there with you!

Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy said: ""Our courts are a national symbol of justice and the rule of law."

It seems like someone doesn't get the symbolism of the Banksy piece.

How could you not get the "symbolism" of Banksy? The man is as subtle as a Family Guy episode.

Uh, no, the piece isn't subtle. They simply disagree with it.

Over the years I heard so many people online mentioning how they liked No Agenda that I tried it 3-4 times and every single time they were talking about some racist or conspiracy theory garbage. Maybe I just happened to randomly pick the only 3-4 times they did that but that was enough for me.

No, it's been consistently like that. I sampled their episodes over a number of years and the theme was the same. It was sad to see Dvorak gradually adopt the same views after a while. At first he would attempt some mild pushback but later he embraced that nonsense full steam. You truly become the average of the people you most surround yourself with.

Sadly, that is true. I went through Dvorak's twitter feed and didn't even get to July 1st before I was exhausted by how much racist stuff he was retweeting.

My girlfriend has XM in her car so on road trips we listen to that. I'm always amazed at how terrible the djs on there are. Many of them are older musicians that I would imagine record all their segments for the week (or even month) in one day. I really don't know why they even bother paying for djs at all.

Small world. I'm sitting here in Terre Haute as I write this. I moved here about a decade ago so radio was already well on its way to the lowest common denominator before I got here. All I know about WBOW is that they turn into all Christmas music after Thanksgiving.

The current WBOW isn't actually connected to the OG WBOW, which was on AM at 1230. It went off the air in 2001 after the owner was convicted of some pretty awful crimes. Another company resurrected the call letters on FM some years later.

early idtech engines were used in lots of games. Since Bethesda bought them they stopped licensing the engine to outside companies. However, Bethesda games could and did still use idtech.

What happened to being able to use themes and skins? Is it just corporate control? Why can't Windows or Mac has a CSS-style system where users can use custom style sheets? It doesn't have to go as far as classic Winamp but just going back to what we had in Win85 would be nice. (and I know there are things like Stardock's Windowblinds but why isn't it built in?)

This is microtransactions in real life. The upsell on these will be crazy.

They seem to be specialized forks though, not actual recreations of the entire Wikipedia. We should have like an actual Mediawiki instance that forks the current Wikipedia content and maybe also leeches contributions off of it for some time to keep it up to date.
