Try invidious. https://invidious.io/ It is a FOSS front end to YT. You can do anything, download in various video and audio formats. Watch any video without signing in. No ads, etc. There are other options as well such as https://newpipe.net/ client for Android and Yattee for iOS. https://github.com/yattee/yattee

I like LibreTube better than NewPipe. It has more features and a better interface imo

Thanks for this. Will be hosting my own copy.

Piped is another option that can be self hosted: https://github.com/TeamPiped/Piped

It's been on my to-do list for a while now.

When I was at the office, there were always two or three people who stopped by my desk every day, and just wanted to talk about some BS thing. Now with work from home I never hear from them. Because they realize that this was non-work related and if they send me an email or chat, that is going to be on the record

No it needs a Google account, but you can setup a burner account

So you cannot own a Sony TV without a Google account? Is that for real? Sony was willing to do that? Is Google paying them?

> Is Google paying them?

Isn't that the whole point of Android TV? It's another revenue stream for Sony, right? If you read through the privacy statement it's clear that Sony is monetizing everything they possibly can.

You can opt-out and lose nothing, as far as I can tell. But IIRC, you do have to accept the privacy policy to apply updates, but then you can opt-out again after.

I doubt it, Android TV (before Google TV) doesn't require a Google account (but strongly urges you to log in) and I don't think they'd change that with the Google TV redesign.

I don't think that's an option anymore, the last time I tried to create an account it required a phone number that it could verify. It didn't even allow me to use an office phone number, only a real mobile number.

I suggest to buy a large computer monitor

Honestly-- what would the difference be between the pined-for "non-smart tv" and a large monitor?

Also-- irony of the "monitor" being the tech that doesn't spy on the user

I think you'll have a hard time finding a computer monitor at TV sizes(say, 50"+) that has modern display features like 4k, OLED, HDR, etc.

How did he manage installing applications such as banking apps from the place store? Unless you’re going to be sideloading the app how do you know that you’re getting official banking app and not just downloading some file online.
