I am not sure whether TOTP can be used two times, but that longer validity aspect already lead to a vulnerability called "Microsoft MFA AuthQuake"

Is ProtonCaptcha [1] a good alternative to reCaptcha? I’m sure it is GDPR compliant but can anyone just use it?

I’d just selfhost a PoW captcha like https://mcaptcha.org/ – should be fine for most applications.

Wow I had no idea this existed, thanks!

It's cool that it even allows you to to get past captchas with JS disabled, I like this a lot.

Thanks for linking this, it’s always nice to see self hosted options.

Those cards look great and I hope this will help some people to learn kanji.

However, I fail to see the USP in comparison with cards like, let’s say from white rabbit press [1]. Is there supposed to be any?

This comes of as simple advertisement.

[1] https://whiterabbitpress.com/kanji-flashcards/

Despite it being an advertisement of something I've done -- in the Show HN sense -- there are many features which distinguish it from other existing resources. For instance:

- Highlighting the Kangxi radical really helps with visually breaking apart the components of each character, and often serves as a hint for the meaning

- Include the meanings for the kun'yomi readings trailed by okurigana, most often verbs and adjectives, which can be easily conjugated according to included cheatsheet

- Always try to use compound examples which only use Kanji seen before according to the order (and, within the same JLPT level, we also topologically sort the Kanji s.t. components appear before Kanji they are part of)

- An etymological classification which hints towards the origin of the character, and, in the digital version, includes a link to the corresponding wiktionary page which often has an explanation. Broadly:

    * Pictographic, a Kanji whose origins lay in "drawings"

    * (Compound) Ideographic, where the Kanji represents an idea or forms a new idea resulting from the meanings of its components

    * Phonetic, where one component (typically the radical) gives a semantic to the character, and another component gives the phonetic family of the character. Essentially the semantic comes broadly from the semantic component and then multiplexes on the component which provides the sound...

On white rabbit specifically:

- We do the traditional flashcard style, where no information at all is given from the back

- We include card markers for physical spaced repetition ala Leitner Box style

- Afer going through the physical cards, eventually up to N3, students have access to the full digital Anki deck to continue studying through all the Joyo with a better scheduler (Anki's FSRS).

Of course, that's where we stand on the design space. A key differing point is mnemonics, which are very common in these resources, but that we purposefully do not use (in fact, this deck was first born out of the frustration with existing mnemonic-based resources, as they typically are disconnected from any real etymological reason, or from the character at hand).

Thanks for this extensive response. I respect what you created there, my comment was not supposed to talk down your creation!

As I already said, they look great! Wish you all the best and lots of success, I mean it.

Edit: maybe add this explanation about what makes your product so special to your site. I mean this extensive explanation (or did I overlook it there?). I am not sure whether it is a good idea to refer to competing products though, this is a question for marketing persons.

Edit2: also, you are absolutely right, this is a show HN post. I should not have made that part of the comment. I apologise.

I think there are noises specific to railways. And from what I believe this "MetaWindow" targets relevant frequencies. However, I am sure this also works for the frequencies generated by car traffic.

At least the linked youtube video in this comment [1] does not mention anything about frequencies.

EDIT: I was wrong about the video. There is _no mention_ about frequencies.

This [1] is the official press release by Deutsche Bahn. I wanted to post this instead, but it is in German.

Thanks that one is better! At least it says: "m Bild: Herkömmliche Lärmschutzwand und MetaWindow im Vergleich (Visualisierung)"

They should just use the new picture and not make the previous way of doing things so central. If one just looks at the picture it could appear as if the wall changes translucency dynamically.

True for most, if not any, reputable email service provider besides Google, MS, and Co.

Don’t know what users here think about posting links to one’s own site, but I’ll risk it. I migrated from gmail to proton, and wrote down the steps and experience. [1]

Should be the same for tutanota or others, don’t know about migration script (easy switch) of others, though. For me it worked without any hiccups.

Thats a really useful overview

It is frightening, how little tenants are protected from being kicked out by the landlord in the US. Are there major differences between the states?

In contrast to that, I believe tenants are too well protected in Europe, or at least Germany, from sitting out in the cold. For example, if a tenant has not paid rent in months (and is not planning on doing so) it still is legally difficult to put them on the street. I think the term for that is squatter?! Friend of mine had damage on his property exceeding €10k until he could regain control over his apartment/flat.

> I think the term for that is squatter?!

Squatting falls under the principle that when a building is unused (a broad term) for a long period of time (e.g. a year), it may be squatted because there is a housing shortage and the country is owned by the civilians. And eviction is generally not straightforward because having a roof above your head is a basic right. I would say its the USA which is backwards here. I mean, WTF. If you decide your tennant has to go, they just have to deal with your decision, make their next weeks of their life revolve around your decision, no matter what? What if they are ill? Need help from others? Cannot relocate easily? Need to find a different job as a result? A one month notice is very, very short.

Btw, squatting isn't even legal anymore in The Netherlands.

In Europe its with the idea that even if a tenant is put on the street it will cost money. Plus it will usually create bigger problems than what ever months of rent are missed.

It’s similar to the fact that giving homeless people a place to live for free is cheaper than continually kicking them on the streets

I can’t speak for other states but there are a number of protections in New Jersey where you cannot easily be kicked out as a tenant with out going to court including things like non payment. This was before Covid added further protections which some have been rolled back.

This might be a stupid question. If WhatsApp wasn’t blocked in China and the second WhatsApp account (aka server side) was outside of China, could this bypass the great firewall?

> If WhatsApp wasn’t blocked in China

The answer is yes, this could be used if WhatsApp wasn't blocked.

But since it blocked in China, you would first need to bypass the firewall anyway.

Sure, just like any proxy though
