It wont be banned, it will just cost much more to insure (since it will be directly tied to risk, computers already drive better than humans). If you drive manually, you will need to pay for the privilege.

> since it will be directly tied to risk, computers already drive better than humans

They do not! Are you comparing computer driving in "easy" situations with human driving in all situations?

I think the comparison is made over the entire range of situations.

If we can get rid of, or vastly reduce, the problems of inattention, exhaustion, rage, chemical impairments and the like, we have a huge improvement. I think that improvement is vastly more, cost measured in human life, than the problems we see with computer control in odd situations.

So yes. They do drive better than humans. The fact that their failings are wack-doodle to us (you drove _right_ into that truck??) is swallowed in the fact that their failings are profoundly fewer than ours.

> their failings are profoundly fewer than ours

Better start showing off some statistics along with that claim.

Insurance is already directly tied to risk - car ensurers are profitable companies with current rates

Just want to say that I am a griddy customer, I don't do it for the absolute lowest cost, but the ability to see and respond to pricing via home automation. A way to hack my electric bill. This week has definitely sucked in terms of cost. Griddy is also introducing contract rates next month, so some amount of power can be purchased at a predicted rate and you get that power at that rate, not the spot price until you run out of that contracted amount of power. (I only know the vague details of the program, just fyi).

Also, this is a regulation failure because the PUCT (or whatever it is called), which is under the purview of the Railroad Commissioner (an elected position), didn't make recommended winterization guidelines mandatory. Without this, the market favors the biggest corner cutting.

COVID19 is also decimating budgets

There is a $0 registration option

For some vehicles, yes.

Such as:

* Toyota Tacoma - yes * Subaru WRX STI - yes

But getting into the honda accord, toyota camry, these are the ICE vehicles that are going to be crazy cheap.

a little interdiction while that new airgapped laptop is shipped to you and they got you, even though you never connected to a network

Exactly what have they got, if you never connect it to a network afterward, either? A key-log that never makes it back to them?

(I’m presuming here that the laptop is openable, and that you will do so and physically remove any wi-fi M.2 card from it — and associated antennae — since you won’t be using it. There might be some sort of extra surface-mount snooper chip left onboard that could replicate the same function — but without big antennas, how’s it going to report?)

You might not understand the depth to which you can be exploited. They will simply let you use your laptop and switch your USB cable, which has a built in 6ft antenna.

Researchers have been able to make integrated circuits emit radio waves.

Perhaps with something like this?

Or this?

If you have actually attracted the attention of the NSA, pulling your NIC is playground stuff.

Ignoring the larger context, but just technologically, RAGEMASTER sounds freakin' sweet. Like that's actually amazing.

And it can add a slight flicker that can be used as a signal and detected from outside.

Working with ACH is NACHA a good day, the day you realize all of banking is built on falling dominos.

Its not just overall grid usage, substations have capacities as well. So the business park is going to be underutilized, but the residential ones are probably seeing more demand as people are at home and not turning up the thermostat during the day to save energy (since they are at home and want a comfortable environment, vs. letting the house sit at 80 when nobody is home).

The temperature on the AC at my house is set at 80F. At 80F with the air flow from fans and a dressing light, there is no reason most people cannot be comfortable. I think that people cranking the AC down to 72F like they do are selfish and do not understand the impact that everyday actions have on the world as a whole.

For me, 80F is well beyond "sweating even without doing anything", even if wearing nothing (which is, thankfully in this work-from-home era, easier than ever.)

I don't run my AC. It regularly gets up to 85-88F. With air flow from fans and dressing light, there's no reason most people cannot be comfortable.

I think that people who run their AC like they do are selfish and do not understand the impact that their everyday actions have on the world.

(I really don't run my AC. I do think people are overly dependent on it. The number of people I know who have their home cooler in the summer than the winter indicates many people really just do it because they can.

But also I'm not a judgey asshole, so I don't moralize about it to people)

Too late to edit or delete this post, but looking back on it a couple hours later, it was unkind and I shouldn't have written it.

That's all.

There's a good number of houses and apartments in the SCV with absolutely terrible insulation. The AC is the only thing keeping the interior moderately comfortable in 90°+ heat. If the thermostat is set to 80° The house will be significantly hotter than that.

> due to a software limitation

This _is_ a cost cutting measure. They decided not to pay for their software to support red eyes.

In case someone is as confused as me wth the discussion is about (never heard that jargon):

> In commercial aviation, a red-eye flight is a flight scheduled to depart at night and arrive the next morning.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-eye_flight

it has to be coming soon, apple is going to be making arm macs and aws has m6a instance types running 64bit arm right now.
