A republic is a country that is not governed by a king or queen.

Russia is a republic. China is a republic. Canada is not a republic. Japan is not a republic.

Describing a form of government as a republic is almost entirely meaningless. It's a split-hair thought-stopper that adds nothing to the conversation.
