For those who only read the title, this is actually only setting the default quality to standard definition.

You can still watch 4k videos by changing the setting manually.



That seems exceedingly reasonable. 4k when you need it, by a lower default.


480 instead of 720 seems a bit excessive of a first-step cutback.


I hope YouTube keeps this, even as a preference - I am often satisfied with 720p, and it uses less bandwidth consumption for those occasions when I am constrained.


Surely you would have gathered that from only reading the title right?


The title was changed. It didn't include 'default' before.
