Warning: The fan motor gets cooled from the airflow. This is drastically altered to something it is not designed for, and can result in fire.

So you mount another, smaller fan inside of the box fan to cool the motor ... I wonder how far this can regress.

So, put the filter on the intake side, and prefer a 4-inch thick filter, if you can find one.
