Gonad size seems like an unsubstantiated hypothesis that’s unlikely to be borne out. Imagine doing the same analysis for any other animal. At least now it’s become a falsifiable hypothesis.

Note I’m discounting comparing gonad size across snails. Keeping track of it per snail as a relative measure to indicates fertility is likely going to be more effective (which I hope is what the scientists are looking at).
