Resuscitating OpenBoot would be great for these devices. It used to be the BIOS of PPC Macs and Sun SPARCs. OpenBoot "programs" (PCI video card BIOS, PCI network card BIOS) were actually Forth bytecode compiled on the fly to the target architecture upon boot, so you could have architecture-independent extension cards.
