2600 was really limited to its tiny amount of memory. It really limited games to one to a few genres, and at very low resolution.
64 kilobytes of memory was not cheap in the early 80s. But very much worth it. A nice XL/XE demo (of an 800XL using a Unocart A8 adapter) and great Atari channel on youtube:
