One thing that I remember learning was about one of the Mexican native tribes (I think Aztecs). After their entire army was defeated by a few hundred Spaniards, the general was annoyed that the natives fought, so they enslaved everyone and had them demolish every single building in the capital. The enslavement was so bad that soon after that 90% of the natives died.
Imagine that after losing a war, your job was to work yourself to death in order to destroy your entire national legacy.
