That's kind of stingy IMO. The push notification service can't be too expensive to run. Plus, notifications are a big part of messaging services.
Yes, the client is open source, but the user would need to submit their own version of the client apps to Google/iOS, while embedding their FCM API info into the app, in order to access push notifications again.
