Have you taken a look at LibreOffice[1]? It forked from OpenOffice a few years, and my understanding is that it is much more actively developed than OpenOffice.

"I hate open office"

Is this hate based on criteria that you can articulate or just a (no doubt strong) feeling?

LO serves my needs well, and the mathematical formula editor is less annoying than the one in MS Office 2010.
