You certainly need to be paid by the hour. The problem at the moment is that you're ripping yourself off.
Sometimes people ask me to work 80 hour weeks, but they only do it if it's really critical, and I never feel ripped off by it.
Mostly they're happy with about 35, since they know as well as I do that any more than that on a regular basis and I'm not going to be too productive.
